Newsletter #34

February 2007

New Outreach Director!

Once again, it's been a long time between Newsletters! This is our "slow" time of the year, but only slow in the sense that we don't have much field work going on, and not a lot of activity in the hatchery! This is catch-up season for us otherwise. There are reports, proposals, budgets and all of those other little details necessary to keep any business afloat! In any case, it's not the kind of stuff most readers want to read about in a newsletter! But, we have not been idle. One of the most exciting happenings for us is the addition of an Outreach Director, John Tullock.

This is something we have been wanting to do for years. Our expertise lies in working with the fishes, not in approaching potential donors or other public relations  matters. We've known John a long time and feel like he will bring a lot to our organization. Here's a bit about John....

John Tullock comes to Conservation Fisheries from Barnes & Noble, where he was Community Relations Manager for the Knoxville store.  He has written numerous books, including 9 on aquariums that remain in print.  Another book, Growing Hardy Orchids, was chosen in 2006 by the American Horticultural Society as one of the five best garden books of the year.  John has served on the Board of Directors of Conservation Fisheries since CFI was incorporated in 1992, and has been an advocate for aquatic conservation since college.  He holds a masters degree in zoology from the University of Tennessee .

One of the first things John will be working on is to give our web site a face lift. We're also hoping to change the format of the Newsletter and get on a better schedule of sending it out.

CFI would like to thank World Wildlife Fund for providing funding that allowed us to take this step! They have been a wonderful supporter of aquatic conservation in the southeastern U. S. and have been great friends to CFI!

Finally, many of you have asked about other CFI t-shirts! We are essentially out of the madtom shirt now. And, I would like to thank everyone involved in the production of that fine shirt....Dave Neely for the wonderful drawing and Casper Cox for the layout....and all of you that purchased the shirts! We would like very much to have a follow-up shirt. We'll be sure to let you know if this happens.
