A Fantastic Bargain

    Please allow me to share some figures on the work Conservation Fisheries has been doing for the past two decades.  CFI has provided perhaps the greatest benefit at the lowest cost of any comparable project.  It currently costs less than $20,000 a year, about $17,000, per species maintained in our hatchery.

   Even more impressive is an estimate of costs to recover the three successfully re-introduced Abrams Creek species (smoky madtom, yellowfin madtom, duskytail darter) over a period of 20 years.  It works out to about $150,000 per species recovered.  Compare this amount to the median cost of $1.4 million per species recovered under the ESA, as reported by the Government Accountability Office, about ten times as much!

   Our work is also highly efficient.  CFI hatchery operations consume 96.2% of total revenues, with a paltry 3.8% going for administrative costs.

   In simplest terms, Conservation Fisheries is a fantastic bargain for biodiversity preservation and species recovery.  Please help us continue to provide this level of value for the wildlife of our country and region.
