Noturus phaeus, Brown madtom
The brown madtom is found in sluggish coastal plain streams in western Tennessee and northern Mississippi.
CFI brought back madtom larvae from the Hatchie River in western Tennessee in an attempt to learn more about madtom spawning in general. We reared these little madtoms until we could identify them as brown madtoms. Surprising to us they spawned for us quite easily! This is very unlike the upland madtoms, which we are still trying to learn the magic behind making them happy enough to successfully reproduce in captivity. Like the piebald madtoms, pairs of the brown madtoms spawned several times in our aquariums. They even reared their young until the hatchlings were able to live independently.
