the fall o f 1998, low water at the spring pond where the Barrens
topminnow was discovered led to the fear that this population might be
extirpated. Just prior to the spring completely drying up, approximately
50 individuals were removed and housed in our facility over winter.
Following heavy rains in late 1998 the flow to the spring pond was
restored, and these individuals were returned to the spring.
An unforeseen benefit of the spring completely drying up was the
elimination of mosquitofish.
