Notropis mekistocholas

Cape Fear shiners are restricted to a few stream reaches in the Cape Fear river system of central North Carolina. CFI produced these endangered shiners primarily for laboratory study. Our work with these interesting shiners allowed us to develop propagation protocols that can be employed if future reintroduction efforts are implemented. While similar to those of the Cahaba shiner, the relatively larege eggs of the Cape Fear shiner are not contained within a gelatinous mass.
