Noturus gladiator

This strikingly colored madtom was formerly known as the "northern madtom," Noturus stigmosus. The southern populations have now been recognized as a distinct species, the piebald madtom, Noturus gladiator. We have worked with this species in an attempt to learn more about madtom spawning in general. We found the piebald madtom relatively easy to induce to spawn. Pairs spawned several times in our aquariums. They even reared their young until the hatchlings were able to live independently.
The piebald madtom is found in sluggish coastal plain streams in western Tennessee and northern Mississippi.
