Native Range: Hiawassee and Little Tennessee Rivers in the Tennessee River watershed in Tennessee

Spawning Habitat Preferences: Mid-spring spawners in large creeks to medium-sized rivers with high flow; eggs are buried in gravel substrates

CFI Status: Propagated at CFI from 2007-2010; 2012-2019 for propagation protocols, restoration, and monitoring (What do these terms mean?)

In Partnership With: Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians; North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission, USFWS (Asheville, NC)

*This species is not listed (and includes the common name in quotation marks) because it is not taxonomically described.

The indigenous name of the Sicklefin Redhorse, coined by the Cherokee Nation, is Jungihtla (pronounced ugii-datli). Jungihtla translates to “wearing a red feather.”
